How It Works
This calculator uses the CPI-U All Items index from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. To find what today's amount would have cost in the past, it divides today's index value by the index value from 12, 24, or 36 months ago and applies that ratio in reverse. Cumulative inflation of 2.4% over 12 months means $100 today would have cost about $97.65 a year ago.
